MachineBuilding is edited by Jonathan Severn, who has a degree in engineering from Cambridge University and many years of experience as a designer of special-purpose machinery and automation.

In 1994 he joined the editorial team at Industrial Technology, the UK's largest design engineering magazine, becoming Machine Building Editor in 2000. In 2004 he was the launch editor of Industrialsafetytalk, which became one of the most comprehensive online sources of industrial health and safety information. After leaving Industrialsafetytalk in 2006, he launched MachineBuilding.net.

During his time as editor of MachineBuilding.net, Jonathan Severn has written the Guide to the New Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, of which over 7500 copies have been distributed worldwide. He has also written a wealth of useful and informative articles, edited thousands of contributed items – all of which are now available on the website – and compiled more than 60 issues of the monthly email newsletter.
