Astrosyn International Technology has developed the APW166 high-performance compound DC motor for use in an arduous tracked-vehicle application.
Astrosyn International Technology has developed a high-performance DC motor for use in demanding environments. The APW166 compound motor with shunt and series windings was designed for powering the hydraulics used for moving a heavy door on a tracked vehicle.
Previously a permanent magnet motor had been used, which suffered from overheating, so the new requirement was for a cooler running, higher power motor that was also lighter.
The motor is also optimised to provide a higher starting torque, as well as meeting demanding levels of ruggedness in terms of shock and EMC standards. Its highly customised design incorporates thermal sensors as well as a speed sensor with specialist electronics that are connected to a contactless relay.
Its hollow shaft enables the motor to be close-coupled with the hydraulic pump. Being rated to IP68, all parts are fully submersible. Operating from an 18-32V DC supply, the motor is designed to be powered from a motor vehicle, and its rugged design makes it suitable for defence and other demanding applications.
