Low-inertia, lightweight coupling with high torsional stiffness

Zero-Max is launching single- and double-flex versions of the aluminium CD shaft coupling that are characterised by low inertia, light weight and high torsional stiffness.

Robert Mainz, Zero-Max sales manager, states: "We surveyed design engineers to find out what was the most desirable feature when specifying couplings for servo motor applications. Low inertia was the most important. These engineers said they continually look for ways to reduce cycle time and improve system productivity. A lightweight yet high strength coupling design will enable the designer to increase the speed of the actuator. The combination of the lightweight aluminium hubs and unique composite disc provides the necessary characteristics to increase speed and cut cycle times. Lightweight couplings will also have an effect on the energy consumption in their designs. The aluminium CD couplings meet those objectives and more."

The CD coupling has a very robust yet lightweight design with the working part made of a special composite material that withstands the stresses of a servo motor's high acceleration rates and high torque capacity better than other alternatives. This results in lower energy requirements, as well as longer life of the motor and other operating components, while ensuring uninterrupted system operation.

Applications include automated packaging systems and assembly machinery where precise, high-speed positioning is required.

Zero-Max CD couplings are available in single- and double-flex models with or without keyways. The double-flex version is for precision applications requiring misalignment capacity greater than the single-flex design. The single-flex models have a torque capacity range from 40-1436Nm and beyond, with speed ratings from 4400-17,000rpm.

Zero-Max can also design and manufacture custom CD couplings to handle virtually any application. All CD couplings are environmentally friendly and are manufactured of RoHS-compliant materials.
