How do you go about CE marking the machines you design and build? Do you use commercial software, or perhaps work through templates or forms that your company has created in-house using a word processing, spreadsheet or database package?
Whatever you do, it seems that there are two key issues to address: achieving full compliance with the requirements of the Machinery Directive; and completing the process as efficiently as possible.
One of the commercial packages available is Safexpert, from IBF. Interestingly, the latest release enables user to work with the new EN 13849-1 standard, which will soon replace EN 954-1. For many machine builders, this will be a major benefit. [See this more recent announcement confirming the extended transition period for EN 954-1 - Ed]
Having had an opportunity to 'test drive' Safexpert 5.4, I have written a review that you can read here.
