8 December 2009: The EC Machinery Working group has agreed to extend the transition period for EN 954-1. This final decision enables EN 954-1 to provide a presumption of conformity to the (new) Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, though there has been no announcement about for how long the transition period is being extended. Read more about the EN 954-1 extension.

EN 954-1 - no extended transition

Following an earlier announcement about the EN 954-1 transition period being extended by three years, the latest news from CEN is that this is no longer the case.

Marie Poidevin of CEN (the European Committee for Standardization) has told MachineBuilding.net that on 21 September 2009 the EC (European Commission) said that the situation regarding EN 954-1 will remain unchanged until further notice, hence it will cease to give presumption of conformity to the Machinery Directive at the end of 2009 as originally planned.

However, that may not be the end of the matter, as EN 954-1 is to be discussed at the next EC machinery WG (working group) in December, following which a final decision should be taken. Meanwhile the EC is gathering views from experts.

Peter Still of Schneider Electric has provided his comments on the latest developments here and Rockwell Automation's views can be read here. The editor's comments can be read here.
