Health & Safety Compliance Engineering is offering a new TUV-accredited training course, Safety of Integrated Manufacturing Systems, which takes into account the recently introduced International standard for machinery safety that has been harmonised to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC as EN ISO 11161:2007+A1:2010 Safety of machinery. Integrated manufacturing systems. Basic requirements (and BS EN ISO 11161:2007+A1:2010 in the UK).

Often it is the end users that take on the task of integrating various machines to create complete lines - such as bottling lines, canning lines, cartoning lines, packaging lines, component assembly systems, palletising systems and de-palletising systems. Because an integrated assembly of machines must be considered to be a whole new and different machine rather than just individual machines combined, it is, therefore, the integrator that must bear the burden of assessing and ensuring compliance of the final construction and declaring its compliance as an 'integral whole' by CE marking it in accordance with the Machinery Directive. The problem is that end users are often unaware that they are responsible for CE marking assemblies of machinery or, if they do understand their obligations, they lack the competences to fulfil them.

The objective of the Safety of Integrated Manufacturing Systemscourse is to give IMS integrators and designers of 'partly completed machinery' the knowledge and tools to enable the machines to be integrated and provide the necessary guarding and protective systems to complete the IMS, to compile the information for safe use and to declare compliance for the Integrated Manufacturing System as a whole by CE Marking.

Designed with a modular structure, the course covers the following topics:

  • Europe and Directives
  • Partly completed machinery and integrated manufacturing systems
  • European harmonised standards
  • Hazards and risks
  • Risk assessment
  • Risk reduction
  • Design of safety-related control systems
  • Protective devices and techniques

In addition, a supplementary Surgery session gives attendees the opportunity to introduce 'real problems, machines and equipment. These can then be discussed, and the knowledge gained from the course can be applied under the guidance of the presenter.
