igus humanoid open platform robot: watch the videoigus has released a video showing its humanoid open platform robot, which was developed in conjunction with the University of Bonn, and the motor-driven slewing rings that drive it.

The igus humanoid open platform robot was developed in conjunction with Bonn’s Autonomous Intelligent Systems group, which conducts research in the areas of cognitive robotics and computer vision. This child-sized robot is constructed from 3D printed parts and controlled by ROS-based software (an open source Robot Operating System). Capable of humanoid movement and interactive behaviour, it won the inaugural RoboCup Design Award at RoboCup 2015 in Hefei, China, before going on to win the Humanoid TeenSize Soccer category at RoboCup 2016 in Leipzig, Germany.

The robot’s movement is powered by igus robolink D motor-driven slewing ring bearings in its articulated joints. These self-lubricating and maintenance-free units are well suited for robotics applications, where relatively slow-moving but smooth movements of high loads are required.
