Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the interesting debate about EN ISO 13849-1 and safety-related mechanical components. You can see how the discussion is developing here and and please send me your own comments.

With regard to standards, more than half of the top twenty search terms used by visitors to are standards-related. If you have an interest in standards there are plenty of relevant Technical Articles on the site, plus we have announcements from BSI, IEC and ISO.

Finally, as the email subject line states, there is a new standard for safety distances, which you can read about in the EN ISO 13857 story below.

EN ISO 13857 Safety Distance Calculator
EN ISO 13857 replaces EN 294 and EN 811, the old reach distance standards, so Procter Machine Guarding is offering an updated Safety Distance Calculator. More?

Cost-effective, high-performance, multiturn angle sensors
These novel non-contact sensors from Variohm offer improved resolution, better repeatability and longer life than potentiometers. More?

Compact high-performance robot features built-in PLC
Toshiba Machine's TH350A SCARA robot boasts a maximum payload of 3kg, a reach of 350mm, repeatability of +/-0.01mm and an integral PLC and I/O. More?

New range of standard conveyor components
Elesa is introducing versatile glass-reinforced polymer components for conveyor systems, transfer lines and specialist machines. More?

Cylinder sensors are more exact, with small hysteresis
IFM's AMR sensors have performance characteristics that make them particularly suitable for short-stroke pneumatic cylinders. More?

Last chance to register for BARA Machine Safety Conference
A handful of places are still available for the Machine Safety Conference on 17 June. Members of BARA, the IET and IMechE enjoy preferential rates. More?

AS-i training course includes integration with other networks
A two-day 'Certified Course on Actuator Sensor Interface Technology' is now available - with the next one scheduled for 11/12 June. More?

LabVIEW controls CERN particle accelerator
NI LabVIEW software, SoftMotion software and R series reconfigurable I/O were used to develop a motion control system for the Large Hadron Collider. More?
