EN 954-1 has now ceased to provide a presumption of conformity to the corresponding essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive. Almost all machine builders who had previously worked to this standard will therefore need to update their Declarations of Conformity (for new machines being placed on the market) so they refer, instead, to the newer functional safety standards (see How to migrate from EN 954-1 to EN ISO 13849-1 or EN 62061 ). In some cases minor changes to the safety-related control system will also be necessary.

For those who have not yet made the transition, however, there are two more articles on MachineBuilding.net that would be worth reading: What to do when EN ISO 13849-1 replaces EN 954-1 , by Robin Carver of Health & Safety Compliance Engineering, and What to do now that EN 954 has gone , by Douglas Florence of SafeMech.

As for updating the Declaration of Conformity and the list of standards in the Technical File, this will have to be done manually unless you have a system for managing the Technical File, which will typically be based on a spreadsheet, database or document management package. If you are concerned that managing the Technical File relies too much on human intervention - and is time-consuming and prone to errors - you could take a look at the CETech Technical File management software from CESystems. Having seen a demonstration, I can report that CETech is very impressive and has the potential to cut the time, effort and risk involved in managing the Technical File and CE marking process.
