Kontron has announced the availability of its new PICMG 1.3-compliant slot CPU board, the Kontron PCI-960. It uses an Intel CoreTM 2 Duo processor (up to T7600) and Mobile Intel 945G Express chipset. This latest advance from Kontron using Intel processors provides faster processing in a compact form factor with minimal increase in power consumption.
First tests indicate that the Core 2 Duo T7600 works noticeably faster in comparison to the Core Duo processor T2600. The Core 2 Duo T7600 shows only marginally higher power consumption despite its higher clock rate and twice as much L2 cache (4 MB). This is ideal for closely packed, space-saving PICMG 1.3 industrial servers with high computing power and an extensive interface configuration. For example, the PICMG 1.3 assemblies are used in multi-processor systems with several servers in just one chassis. They are used in testing and measurement technology with simultaneous data collection and evaluation, with parallel processing of several video and/or audio streams. Other applications are in the field of control and visualization of imaging technologies in the medical or medical imaging area generally and in the broad field of simulation.
Thanks to PCI Express over backplane (1x PCIeX16, 4 x PCIeX1 or 1 x PCIeX4), the graphics and peripheral card address a total of 8Gbyte/s full duplex and is noticeably accelerated in comparison to PCI. On the new Kontron PCI-960 touts two 6x USB 2.0 in front, 3x 10/100/1000 base-T Ethernet, one parallel and two serial interfaces (16550 UART-compatible), DIMM sockets for up to 4 GB DDR2-SDRAM, CompactFlash card sockets, 1 EIDE and 4 SATA interfaces and 6-channel AC97 Audio Codec (including digital input and output). If there is no external graphics card, it is possible to connect CRT or LVDS. Additional interfaces can be adapted via mini-PCI connectors. Kontron offers additional assemblies for LAN, WLAN and SCSI. Software support is offered for Windows XP and 2000 (also in server versions) and Linux. Additional operating systems are possible on a project basis.
