The functionality of off-highway vehicles is increasingly determined by software; indeed, optimum functionality for different vehicle types and operating conditions can only be ensured by intelligent software. In addition, the increasing networking of vehicles using CAN networks also provides new levels of functionality that could not be realised mechanically.

At ZF, software is being employed to optimise the performance of new-generation transmissions such the Ergopower unit. Adaptable to a wide range of construction vehicles in the range 80-310kW, Ergopower meets all current market demands, delivering improved operating and shifting comfort, with commensurate reductions in fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Key to meeting these demands is great flexibility; every Ergopower unit can be tailored at the factory with components and optional accessories that exactly match the vehicle application.

Recently Ergopower has been augmented with three new functions: Ergolockup, Ergotraction and Ecotraction, all of which are aimed at provided improved economy and reduced wear and tear on the transmission.

ZF Ergolockup ensures that the converter lock-up clutch is applied modularly by the software at low speeds. In this way it is possible to reduce the fuel consumption of wheel loaders, depending upon the operating conditions, by up to 15 per cent. This corresponds to fuel savings of approximately 2.5 l/hour. With an average annual performance of 2000 operating hours and ten vehicles, this means 50,000 litre fuel savings every year. Furthermore, a reduction in noise emission is achieved as a result of reduced engine speeds.

The Ergotraction option automates engagement and disengagement of powershiftable differentials. This is a new lock management approach developed by ZF engineers in numerous trials and field tests. Whereas differential locks in the past were only engaged when needed, today they are engaged continuously. This innovation protects driveline components and tyres. Furthermore, it provides a platform for achieving considerable fuel savings.

With Ecotraction, the final Ergopower option, the axle disconnection at the transmission is automated. If the four-wheel-drive function is no longer required under certain application conditions, one axle is disconnected. So with a smart design, the condition of the drive components and tyres can be preserved. In particular, in the case of high driving speeds, significant fuel savings and improved driving performance can be achieved.
