Miniature servo motor achieves sub-micron resolutionThe Edge Motor from Nanomotion is a micro-sized sub-micron resolution ceramic servo motor that is extremely compact and therefore suitable for space-restricted and miniaturised mechatronic assemblies.

Available in the UK from Heason Technology, the Edge measures just 13.5mm long by 7.6mm wide and 3.15mm high yet has delivers a dynamic stall force of 300mN at speeds of up to 120mm/s – which is sufficient to position apertures, shutters, focussing mechanisms and other small optical devices, as well as miniature pumps, grippers and micro-positioning actuators with unlimited linear or rotary travel.

The Edge Motor's modular design includes a flexible flat vinyl cable assembly with two 1.35mm diameter mounting holes and mounting pins for simple integration into a suitable bearing structure with linear encoder or other position feedback device. The durable motor is rated for industrial applications with a temperature range of –20 to +60degC and is well suited to non-magnetic environments.

Servo control is provided via a compact ASIC-based driver that is compatible with Nanomotion motion controllers and most analogue interfaced (+/-10V) motion controllers from Heason Technology's wide range. Servo motion is both smooth and precise over a wide dynamic velocity range, with positioning resolution better than 100nm, making the Edge motor suitable for ultra-low-speed scanning applications.

Unlike standard rotary micro motors, the technology has an inherent holding force, effectively braking and maintaining the motor position at standstill and under power-off conditions - with complete stability and zero drift.
