Inertial Aerosystems is launching a new low-cost surface-mount three-axis multichip module for low field magnetic sensing, complete with a digital interface for applications such as low-cost compassing and magnetometry. Designated the HMC 5843, it is manufactured by Honeywell Aerospace.

This innovative product includes three 1043 series magnetoresistive sensors and a Honeywell-developed ASIC containing amplification, strap drivers, offset cancellation, 12-bit ADC and an I2 C serial bus interface. Measuring just 4 x 4 x 1.3mm, the modules are surface-mounted and suitable where space and weight are at a premium.
By using established Anisotropic Magnetoresistive (AWR) technology, this product has the advantage of being sensitive to low fields and having low hysteresis. The sensors feature precision in axis sensitivity and linearity, solid-state construction with very low cross-axis sensitivity, designed to measure both direction and magnitude of the Earth's magnetic fields from tens of micro-gauss to 6gauss.
Designed for high-volume, cost-sensitive OEM designs and compatible with high-speed SMT assembly, it is available in tape and reel packaging. Suitable for battery-powered applications, it complies with current environmental standards. Demonstration and pin-out boards for product evaluation and development are available upon request.
This versatile device can be used in auto navigation systems, personal navigation devices, magnetometers and consumer electronics.
