Guards for Webster and Bennett vertical boring machinesProcter Machine Guarding is promoting its comprehensive service to design, manufacture and install guards on Webster and Bennett vertical boring machines. Manufactured to fit each individual machine, the guards use standardised design concepts so that they are quick and economical to produce, as well as being proven on dozens of W&B vertical borers already. These guards will be of interest to end-user companies that have identified a need to install guarding on their existing machines, as well as companies rebuilding machine tools, and dealers needing to equip second-hand machines with adequate safeguards before placing them on the market (in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974).

As well as meeting the requirements stipulated in BS EN 953, Safety of machinery. Guards. General requirements for the design and construction of fixed and movable guards, and BS EN 13128, Safety of machine tools - Milling machines (including boring machines), the guards are designed to take account of ergonomics (as required by BS EN 953 and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC), and they also enable machine owners and suppliers to comply with the necessary regulations and legislation - such as PUWER 98 and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Two configurations of guarding are offered to suit manual machines and those fitted (or being retrofitted) with NC/CNC controls. Manual Webster and Bennett machines require close-fitting guards such that the controls can still be reached (see top photo), whereas NC/CNC machines are fully enclosed (see lower photo). In all cases, customers can specify the finish and the material used for the viewing windows (polycarbonate or laminated glass), the type of guard interlocks, and numerous other details.

Procter Machine Guarding provides a comprehensive service, from the initial consultation and survey, through to design, manufacture, installation and documentation. Customers therefore know exactly what they will be getting, with the added benefits of cost-effectiveness and low risk that are associated with sourcing from a single supplier with a track record in retrofitting guards to Webster and Bennett vertical boring machines.

As well as providing guards for Webster and Bennett vertical borers, Procter Machine Guarding can also retrofit and upgrade guards on similar VBM tools from manufacturers such as Schiess and Toshulin.
