Henkel is launching Loctite 4902 that offers industry – and the medical device sector in particular - a novel combination of performance characteristics. This product combines the traditional benefits of an instant adhesive with flexibility, resistance to leaks and excellent sealing capability.
Cyanoacrylates, better known as instant adhesives, have become very popular in manufacturing and assembly thanks to their rapid speed of cure, ease of use and good bond strength. However, the joints they create are sometimes too inflexible for certain applications.
Where bond lines need to withstand movement or expansion, and where sealing capability is required, Henkel recommends its new Loctite 4902. This highly flexible adhesive offers elongation of up to 155 per cent, yet it still provides a high-strength bond in seconds.
The elongation of a traditional 'instant' is typically less than 2 per cent, so Henkel says this addition to the Loctite range is in a class of its own and rivals the flexibility commonly provided by acrylic and urethane adhesives.
Clear and colourless, Loctite 4902 also complies with the ISO 10993 biocompatibility standard, making it suitable for the assembly of medical devices. It facilitates the use of dissimilar materials – plastics, rubbers and metals – and opaque substrates, while enhancing the overall performance of the device.
Typically this low viscosity, single-part adhesive will be used to bond close-fitting, flexible parts; the use of a primer can also enhance the bond strength of difficult-to-bond substrates such as polyethylene or polypropylene. An activator can also be applied to the surface where larger bond gaps need to be bridged.
