An easier way to integrate Delta robots in automation systems

Omron Electronics is launching a new capability in its Sysmac Automation Platform that enables Delta robots to be integrated with control functionality on a single platform and programmed with one software package. If necessary, a vision sensor can also be included to provide vision guidance for the robots.

This means machine builders can get everything they need from a single source for a complete automation line incorporating Delta robots (parallel kinematics robots), including control, multi-axis motion control, safety, Delta robots and, when required, vision sensors. This is a much easier, lower-risk option than trying to integrate equipment from multiple suppliers, and the user-friendly Sysmac Studio Automation software enables non-experts to program the robots at the same time as other aspects of the automation. The IEC 61131-3 compliant Sysmac Studio programming software has been enhanced by the addition of new function blocks for controlling Delta robots.

Currently the Sysmac robot control capability can only be used with Omron's Delta robots, but these versatile units are sealed to IP54 and can be further protected for use in food packaging environments. Two models of robot are available to suit differing payload and reach requirements.

Omron uses EtherCAT for high-speed communications between the various hardware elements, so a fast cycle time of 2ms is possible even when eight Delta robots are being controlled simultaneously (or 1ms for four robots), with the robots capable of performing up to 200 cycles per minute.

Customers have a choice of NJ Robotics CPUs for the machine automation controller, for 16, 32 or 64 axes. If required, vision capability is provided by the FQ-M vision sensor that has been specially developed for robotic applications such as pick-and-place tasks in packaging machinery where parts need to be picked from random locations on a conveyor. Highly compact, and with a maximum processing rate of 5000 pieces per minute even with full 360 degree rotation, the FQ-M vision sensor comes with Ethernet and EtherCAT embedded, and an incremental encoder input for easy tracking and calibration when operating above conveyors. Depending on the application requirements, one FQ-M vision sensor can easily serve multiple Delta robots.

According to Omron, the new Sysmac robotic capability offers machine builders and system integrators a number of benefits:

  • Reduced component count
  • Fewer suppliers
  • One programming environment in Sysmac Studio
  • Reduced cabling time
  • More information available via EtherCAT during commissioning, operation and maintenance
  • Option to add vision guidance very easily
