igus UK is introducing the drylin SLN-27 miniature linear axis with polymer bearings and an optional NEMA 11 stepper motor. Developed specifically for simple handling tasks in confined spaces, this high-performance miniature linear drive offers design flexibility for positioning small loads.
The drylin SLN-27 miniature linear axis is based on the proven technology of the drylin N27 linear guide system, with the linear rail made of durable anodised aluminium. The plastic module has high wear resistance, is maintenance-free, self-lubricating and corrosion-resistant, providing a 'fit and forget' product. With compact dimensions of 22mm high by 28mm wide, it is suitable for application such as low-load sensor adjustments and feed mechanisms, as well as lightweight handling tasks. Other applications include electrically adjustable seats and other fittings in commercial aircraft.
As almost all of the components used in the drylin SLN-27 linear unit are made of either plastic or aluminium, the system is robust and lightweight. The carriage is driven by a 5mm trapezoidal or high-helix lead screw, and is available in a range of pitches from 0.8mm to 5mm. Customers can choose from zinc-plated steel or stainless steel for the lead screw (the high-helix version is offered in stainless steel only). Lead screw nuts are made of iglidur high-performance polymers optimised for lubricant-free operation over the entire stroke length, which can be a maximum of 250mm, and the rotary/thrust bearings at the ends of the lead screw are also manufactured from self-lubricating, maintenance-free igus polymers.
Threaded aluminium inserts in the carriage are provided for attaching the driven components, and the carriage also features grub screws for adjusting the bearing preload.
Matthew Aldridge, a director of igus UK, says: "Weighing in at 69g, the SLN-27 is one of the featherweights of the driven linear guide industry. Even with the maximum stroke length of 250mm, this miniature actuator weighs just 160g." Maximum static load capacities are 10N (axial) and 40N (radial), maximum speed is 300rpm and maximum drive torque is 0.1Nm.
The compact SLN-27 can be bought as a complete system with a NEMA 11 stepper motor fitted, still achieving 28 x 28mm compact dimensions, and is made using stock components, individually configured to the required length. Alternatively, for customers that already have a stepper motor made by another manufacturer, igus offers a 'quick-fit' aluminium spacer and motor flange connection to fit the NEMA 11 motor. If preferred, the miniature linear drive can be operated manually.
