Dundee College invests in ESAB welding technology

As a highly regarded educational establishment, Dundee College puts the quality of its tuition and the future success of its students at the top of its priorities. No more clearly is this seen than in the college's major investment in welder training facilities which reflect the college's commitment to continuous improvement. This has included the specification of both ESAB and Murex welding technology for the college's new welding workshops.

The welding courses at Dundee College are very popular. The college has strong links with industrial training bodies and a diverse range of local industries who are always looking for welders with a broad range of skills. To meet this demand the college offers a number of welding courses from introductory to advanced level, where students cover the key MIG/MAG,TIG and MMA processes. Successful delegates are provided with the opportunity to be assessed for BS4872, ASME9, AWSD1.1, EN287 and other welder approval qualifications.

Jeff Imrie of Dundee College says: "Welding is a vast industry and has a wide range of skill sets associated with it. We strive to offer students the skills that they need to fulfil their own ambitions within industry, and to an extent our courses reflect what the students want. We also try to ensure that the training they receive provide the skills that employers are looking for."

With this aim in mind, selection of the most appropriate welding equipment for the new welder training facilities was critical. Mr Imrie continues: "For us, the ESAB Origo Mig 4001i air cooled welding packages were ideal. They are excellent training tools, simple to use and without unnecessary secondary functions. However, the technology reflects the standard of equipment being used on a day-to-day basis in many different industries."

The ESAB Origo Mig 4001i is suitable for efficient production welding or prefabrication of high alloyed materials with a very high demand on the welding performance. The power source is compact and robust, with a chassis made of galvanised steel that can withstand rough treatment on a daily basis.

With input from ESAB's local expert Allan Forrest, Dundee College has now invested in a further 14 ESAB Origo Mig 4001i packages together with ESAB Aristofeed 3004 U6 wire feeders, interconnection cables as well as Murex MXA 363B welding torches. This latest investment comes on top of investment in 2011 in four ESAB Origo 4001i machines and two further machines earlier in 2012. In total the college now has 20 ESAB welding machines and the new welder training facility has been increased from eight to over 20 bays.

Dundee College`s new Welding "Centre of Excellence' has a footprint of 475m2 and cost in the region of 500k. This new state-of-the-art facility will have the capacity to accommodate 60 welding students, and is now fully equipped for the future. Whether it is welding for general fabrication work or more specialist welding tasks, its students could not wish for a better grounding from which to launch their future careers.
