Electronic commutation supersedes brushed motors

Brushless, electronically commutated motors are impressive because of their exceptionally long service life. The commutation electronics are integrated in the new EC-max 16 two-wire motor, which is only 16mm in diameter, 33.5mm long and has a nominal output of 5W. The reduction to two connection wires allows brushed motors to be replaced directly.

The new EC-max 2-wire motor from maxon Motor continues the tried-and-trusted philosophy behind the company's EC-max motors. The ironless winding of System Maxon offers important physical advantages: the motor turns cog-free and is highly efficient.

A stainless steel motor housing, when combined with the metal flanges, provides a high degree of temperature stability, good heat dissipation and excellent shielding against electrical fields. Highly automated production processes mean that the motors have an excellent price/performance ratio.

The integrated electronics allow direct control with an operating voltage of 5-15V; the motor turns in proportion to the applied voltage with the relevant speed in a given direction. The electronics have inbuilt circuits to protect the motor against polarity reversal, overheating, axle blocking and under-voltage.

With a nominal output of 5W, the motor generates continuous torque of up to 3.4mNm. A 16mm diameter planetary gearhead can be added to increase torque up to a maximum of 0.3Nm. The motor can be used in any application where a long service life but simple/compact controls are required in the same size product - such as handheld tools or space-saving automation systems.
