Ethernet-enabled device reads damaged bar codes

Code reconstruction, integrated fieldbus connectivity, simplified installations without need of interfacing units or gateways and simple parameterisations are just some of the many features that make the new BCL 500i series of bar code readers suitable for monitoring the high-speed flow of individual components, cartons or complete palletised loads, guaranteeing correct code pickup and ultra-fast delivery to the control/monitoring station even when the bar code is skewed, damaged or even dirty. The new 500i series is being launched by Leuze Mayser and is the latest in a long line of market-leading innovations from the company.

Ethernet-enabled device reads damaged bar codes

Unlike simple scanning systems where the full bar code is recognized by a single continuous scan, the code reconstruction technology of the 500i gathers data from several high-speed passes, and, via bespoke Leuze software, is able to completely rebuild the correct identity despite a code label being misaligned or partially damaged. Integral to the superior data capture process is the new high-performance lens that has been developed specifically for use in the BCL 500i barcode reader, giving it a +/-30-degree asymmetrical optical angle of aperture that ensures a large scanning field even at close range.

With a specification list that shows an adjustable scanning rate of 800 to 1200 scans per second and a reading field of 200 by 1600mm it is easy to understand why Leuze Mayser is targeting high-speed handling and transfer applications - typically those found in component manufacture, food processing and packaging areas, high-speed sortation processes in distribution warehouses, and airport logistics.

Ethernet, Profibus and others

A host of connectivity services come as standard with the 500i scanner including serial interfaces for RS 232 or RS 422 and RS 485, plus additional communication channels that can each be configured individually as real-time Ethernet, fieldbus interfaces such as Profibus, and Leuze's own multiNet facility for networking applications. The nerve centre for the directly integrated communications is a high-end 32-bit network controller, which creates benefits in terms of simplified wiring and a higher data rate in practically every case, thereby eliminating bottlenecks caused by additional interfacing units or gateways.

As is customary in the Profibus environment, the device can be fully parameterised via the fieldbus; alternatively it can be addressed via a USB interface. The parameterisation software, called WEB-Config, features comprehensive menu and operator prompting and allows communication via any optional web browser. For users, this avoids the effort involved in maintaining and updating external parameterisation and configuration software on service laptops. The interface is conditioned in such a way that a USB memory stick can be used as an external parameter memory with simultaneous capability for performing documentation and monitoring functions.

The 500i Series is the very latest high-end, high-speed performance bar code reader to be unveiled by Leuze Mayser in the UK and becomes an integral part of the well established BCL series, creating a range that has models to suit virtually all applications, whether it is in a food processing environment, low-temperature store or a distribution centre. The range is continually evolving to ensure the Leuze brand is recognised worldwide for high specifications, superior performance and ultra-reliable bar code readers and scanners.
