EU MEPS electric motor efficiencies and deadlines
Eriks has created a section on its website that is devoted to the new EU MEPS (Minimum Energy Performance Standard) scheme that mandates minimum efficiency levels (defined by EN 60034-30 in Europe and IEC 60034-30 elsewhere) for certain categories of electric motors placed on the market in Europe. Included within the scope of the MEPS scheme are two-, four- and six-pole single-speed, three-phase induction motors rated from 0.75kW to 375kW for use with voltages up to 1000V. However, the scheme comes into force in three phases, with the first deadline being 16 June 2011.
The three deadlines, with the motors covered under each, are listed on the Eriks website, together with an explanation of the implications for motor manufacturers/suppliers - and, consequently, machine builders, system integrators and companies replacing or upgrading motors on existing machinery.
Further useful information on the Eriks website includes a table showing how the new IEC 60034-30 efficiency classes (IE1, IE2, IE3 and IE4) relate to the old CEMEP efficiency classes (EFF3, EFF2 and EFF1). There are also links to more information about motors from several different manufacturers, namely WEG, Fenner and Brook Crompton.
