Flow meters now available to suit higher flow rates
ifm electronic is introducing new models of its popular SM flow meters with higher flow rates. Whereas the maximum flow rate was previously 100 l/m, new models of these magflow magnetic-inductive flow meter can handle flows of 300 l/m and 600 l/m. As with the 100 l/m meter, the new instruments benefit from good accuracy and attractive pricing, though the larger units also have some new features. Both of the new meters are available with a choice of seals to suit different media, making four new models in total.
The renowned accuracy of earlier SM flow meters applies just as much to the new, larger versions, being +/-(2% MV + 0.5% VMR), but the new versions offer additional features and functions. One new feature requested by users of the smaller types is empty pipe detection to confirm loss of the medium; another is a simulation output that simulates all process variables for test purposes. A third is noise suppression in the low-flow range, so movement due to vibration or heat is not measured as flow.
As before, the new larger SM flow meters can also monitor the medium temperature.
All four new SM units operate on an 18-32V DC supply and feature two outputs. The outputs can switch 150mA either PNP or NPN and can be configured for different functions. The first output has five possible configurations: a switch output for empty pipe detection; a switch output for flow rate monitoring; frequency output flow rate monitoring; a pulse output quantity meter; and signal output preset counter.
The second output has six configurations: a switch output for empty pipe detection; a switch output for flow rate monitoring; a frequency output flow rate monitoring; a switch output for temperature monitoring between -20 and 80degC; an analogue output for flow rate; an analogue output for medium temperature; and an input for signal counter reset. Users can select analogue signals as 4-20mA or 0-10V. The latest IO-Link standard interface for communication is included, should users wish to make use of this external facility.
Wetted parts are manufactured from high-grade stainless steel, hastelloy and PEEK, with O-rings in either EPDM or FKM.
Applications for SM flow meters include machine tools (coolant), energy management and food processing.
