How does a line-scan camera work?

This type of machine vision camera is very popular for some types of industrial imaging applications but, with their single row of light-sensitive pixels, they are used in a different way from the area-scan cameras with which most people are familiar due to their ubiquitous use in digital cameras and smartphones - as well as machine vision, of course.
