Laser triangulation sensors with extended measurement ranges

Micro-Epsilon UK is launching new models of its groundbreaking laser triangulation sensors with integrated controllers that are said to offer machine builders, systems integrators and OEMs an unrivalled combination of technical benefits in terms of their compact size, performance (up to 4kHz measuring rate) and ease of installation. Two laser displacement sensor ranges are available - the optoNCDT 1320 and the optoNCDT 1420 - and the latest models feature measurement ranges of 200 and 500mm, adding to the existing 10, 25, 50 and 100mm versions.

Laser triangulation sensors with extended measurement ranges

The optoNCDT 1320 is the entry-level version for high-precision measurement of displacement, distance and position. The controller is integrated in the sensor housing, which simplifies installation and setup. The sensor is extremely compact (46x30x20mm), lightweight (30g) and can therefore be mounted in tight spaces on machines or other difficult-to-access locations. According to Micro-Epsilon, the sensor is highly suitable for automation and applications in which high accelerations occur, including machine tools, robot arms and automated pick-and-place systems.

Auto Target Compensation feature

The optoNCDT 1320 offers high accuracy and adjustable measuring rates of up to 2kHz. Furthermore, Micro-Epsilon says this sensor has a unique Auto Target Compensation (ATC) feature that ensures stable distance signal control regardless of target colour or brightness. A small, sharply projected laser spot size ensures even extremely small objects can be measured reliably.

Micro-Epsilon has designed the optoNCDT 1320 for rapid installation and setup, which is achieved with just a few clicks of the multi-function sensor button. Users can select the zero setting/mastering function or the trigger setup. An intuitive web interface enables users to carry out extended sensor setup and configuration. For the most common surface types, users can select from a menu of predefined settings. A 'quality slider' enables the sensor to be adapted to static and dynamic processes.

With identical dimensions to the optoNCDT 1320, the optoNCDT 1420 is designed for high-precision, high-speed, dynamic displacement, distance and position measurement applications. The measuring rate is adjustable up to 4kHz and the sensor offers an excellent price-performance ratio, particularly for high-volume OEM applications.

A range of different output signals enables easy integration of the sensor into plant or machine control systems. As well as analogue voltage and current outputs, a digital RS422 interface provides distance information from the sensor. For ease of installation, users can select from either a 3m long integrated cable with open ends, or a 0.3m pigtail with M12 connector.

All optoNCDT 1420 sensors operate using a web interface for fast sensor setup and configuration. Up to eight user-specific sensor settings can be stored and easily exported to other sensors. Additional features of the optoNCDT 1420 include video signal display, signal peak selection and freely adjustable signal averaging, which enables optimisation of the measurement task. A region of interest (ROI) function enables background signal noise to be filtered out.

Chris Jones, Managing Director at Micro-Epsilon UK, comments: "The optoNCDT 1320 and 1420 sensors set new standards in laser displacement measurement. The speed, size, performance and ease of integration of these sensors is unrivalled in the market today. This will open up a variety of new medium- to high-volume applications for the sensors in automation, machine building and systems integration, particularly where conventional laser sensors have reached the limits of their performance capabilities."

The optoNCDT 1320 and 1420 series are available in measuring ranges of 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 500mm.
