Kabelschlepp Metool is on Stand 4320 in Hall 4 at MACH 2012 to promote its multiple-band cable carriers, which are designed to withstand higher loads. High additional loads and the consequence of long downtimes are a challenging combination for the design of cable carriers. Kabelschlepp Metool offers products in multiple-chain band design, for steel as well as synthetic material products.
Stability and durability are the key features of all cable conveyors in the Kabelschlepp range. This principle of construction is designed into all types. However, in many areas of application, extreme operating and environmental conditions are found, requiring special solutions.
The comprehensive portfolio, in combination with many years of engineering know-how, means that Kabelschlepp Metool products are equipped for tough applications. For example, cable conveyors in the multiple-band design have proven themselves; by using an additional chain band, the additional load can be increased by approximately 50 per cent in comparison with a conventional design.
A multiple-band design is recommended if there are space constraints, even if a large number of supply lines must be carried, with a higher weight and larger diameters. Here, conventional double-side band carriers may attain their load limit. If alternative installation options are excluded, such as opposing or nested chains, products with a multiple-belt design provide an alternative to fit the given envelope space.
Aluminium cross-stays allow precise chain widths to be maintained and high torsional stability to be ensured. While three- or four-band chains are the most common versions, Kabelschlepp Metool has designed chains with up to seven side bands. These designs have proven themselves in heavy manufacturing machinery, in steelworks, on paper machines, and on the gantry of an MRT system.
If the problem is the complexity of a system with multiple supply lines, the required performance with specific properties and diameters of cable, or the distance to travel, the additional load may exceed the parameters of a conventional design, and subsequently continuous functionality is not ensured.
Thomas Ameis, the design manager for power chain systems at Tsubaki Kabelschlepp, says: "For example, large power lines are more or less copper strands with a high weight per metre. In addition, there are other cable and large OD, heavy hydraulic hoses, which can even bring steel chains to their limits." Failure of the drag chain system usually means a machine shutdown, which is to be avoided if possible. Because of the rigid design of a multiple-band chain, all media to be carried can be managed reliably.
Double-sided band carriers are specifically designed for durability. Initially introduced for the Steel Line LS 1050 and the MC 1300 hybrid power chain, the double-side band was positively received. Essentially, each of the normal chain bands was reinforced with a second one. The result was superior stability, so that in direct comparison with the standard versions the steel chain in the double-side band design gained up to 40 per cent more self-supporting length. The hybrid chain with four synthetic material side belts gained up to 30 per cent travel. In addition, the LS 1050 has longer service life, even at greater dynamic loading and high travel speeds. The MC 1300 shows high tensile rigidity and lateral stability.
