New integrated cylinder lock for Eaton NZM circuit breaker

Eaton is now offering its NZM circuit breakers with a safe key cylinder lock which is integrated directly into the attached rotary drive mechanism. The new safety lock enables the mechanical interlocking of two NZM breakers, whereby only the circuit breaker with the inserted key can be switched on. With the addition of the safe key users can now lock NZM circuit breakers and switch disconnectors in the "OFF" position quickly and easily, ensuring that switches are protected against accidentally being switched on.

The locking mechanism increases the safety of machines and plant and improves work safety. Fast installation and activation of the switch-lock combination is possible due to the cylinder key being part of a preinstalled kit. The mechanical interlocking prevents switching on a circuit breaker, thus fulfilling disconnection properties as required by IEC/EN 60947-1 when in the "OFF" position.

This interlocking system can be used for all frame sizes of the NZM circuit breakers and switch disconnectors. Application areas include commercial and industrial supply systems, process industry, shipbuilding, mining, data centres, emergency power supply, and telecommunications.

Eaton describes the locking mechanism as a simple method for safe working on powered down machines or plant and for safely interlocking several devices. The circuit breaker must be switched off to lock the system. The safety key can also only be removed in the "OFF" position. The mechanism includes a safety lock for each case with two locking keys in combination with a preassembled kit.

There are four frame sizes in the NZM portfolio, with a breaking capacity from 25kA for a small sub-distribution station up to 150kA for complex high-energy plant. The compact design of the small 160A device helps to save space as a primary switch in machine controls and as an incoming circuit breaker in distribution boards or outgoing feeder breakers in panelboards or switchboards.

Various trip unit versions are available for the NZM models, either in low-cost design with thermal magnetic trip units (NZM1-3) or with communication-enabled digital electronic trip units (NZM2-4) for various protective functions.

NZM Energy electronic power circuit breakers, which are part of the xEffect switchgear series for worldwide industrial applications, record and communicate comprehensive diagnostic and energy consumption data as an integrated function for all stages of energy distribution. All important information can be recorded, displayed locally with the BreakerVisu visualisation and logging system, or via the SmartWire-DT intelligent communication system, and further transmitted to higher-level systems, thus increasing the visibility and safety of the plant. In addition, users can optimise energy useage to environmental standard ISO 50001, making it possible to lower their energy consumption and thus to reduce operating costs.
