Parallel kinematic robots are easily configured online

Festo's EXPT parallel kinematic robots can now be configured online quickly and simply, making it much easier and quicker for engineers to specify a robot to suit their application requirements.

Parallel kinematic robots, also known as delta robots or tripod robots, are high-speed handling units with robotic functionality for free movement in 3D space. Festo's EXPT, for example, has a high dynamic response of up to 150picks per minute thanks to the low moving mass, and the very rigid pyramid structure ensures high accuracy of the path and position, with minimal vibration.

The EXPT uses belt-drive actuators with pairs of rods on which the front unit is mounted and maintained in a horizontal orientation. Because the servo motors and actuators do not move, the robot's moving mass is low and the payload can be up to 5kg. Customers can specify a front unit with an integral geared motor to give a fourth axis of motion (rotary), and front units are offered with or without a feed-through. Typical applications include picking and placing small parts, bonding, labelling, palletising, sorting, grouping, separating and repositioning. Festo offers the EXPT in four sizes with working space diameters ranging from 450mm to 1200mm.

To complement the EXPT robot Festo has developed the CMCA control system. Two versions are available for mounting on the machine or inside a control cabinet. Included within the CMCA control system are the CMXR multi-axis controller, CMMP motor controller, a safety circuit and a CDSA teach pendant. Each CMCA control system is pre-programmed and tested with the EXPT robot prior to delivery. Machine builders and system integrators often use the EXPT robot in conjunction with a vision system for applications involving inspection, picking or positioning, so Festo has ensured that vision systems can be readily integrated with the CMCA control system.

Festo has already marketed the EXPT parallel kinematic robot, but now the company has developed an online configuration tool that enables engineers to develop a robot configuration that matches their requirements. As well as specifying the robot and control system, engineers can also use the online tool to select accessories and download data sheets, documentation and 2D/3D CAD files.
