PI adds new Q-Motion compact rotary stage: Q-632

PI is adding a new piezo inertia drive rotary stage to its existing Q-Motion product line of compact linear and rotary systems - the Q-632. This compact micropositioning drive is only 32mm wide, 7mm high, and has a 30mm turntable diameter with 360 degree rotation range.

PI adds new Q-Motion compact rotary stage: Q-632

The Q-632 delivers precision rotation with minimal incremental motion of 3 urad in closed-loop operation and velocity of 45deg/s. The self-clamping motor design provides long-term power-off position-hold capabilities without the need for a brake - another space and energy-saving advantage of the Q-Motion positioner series. All Q-Motion rotation stages are suitable for a vacuum to 10-6hPa; ultrahigh vacuum-compatible versions are also available on request.

The Q-600 series of miniature rotary stages include the smallest motorized stage that fits on a finger-tip - the Q-614, with a 14mm diameter turntable and velocity 70 °/s. The Q-632 offers variety with open and closed loop versions. The closed loop version is equipped with a direct measuring sensor providing 0.75 urad resolution.

Stick-slip drive motors, lacking gears, are powered by the natural difference in the static and dynamic friction coefficients found between two surfaces. This direct linear motion drive principle reduces the number of components that can wear, making the stages more compact, reliable, and cost efficient. PI stages and drives can be customised for larger production quantities.

Application Examples of the Q-632 include precision positioning and alignment of compact opto-mechanical components in research and OEM applications. Fields of applications include automation, photonics, bio-nano-technology, metrology, microscopy, life sciences, micro-manipulation, including cleanroom applications.

Features at a glance:

  • 360 degree rotation range
  • Self-clamping stick-slip motor, no jitter/drift, no holding current
  • Ultra-compact: 32mm wide, 7mm high
  • 45deg/sec max. velocity
  • Vacuum and non-magnetic options
