Pneumatic brake system ROBA-linearstop tested by TÜV Süd

On gravity-loaded axes in machines and systems, there is always a potential risk of crashing loads. In order to protect people and materials reliably against injury and damage in spite of this risk, mayr power transmission has therefore long provided a full-quality safety brake for vertical axes which has been tested by the TV (German Technical Inspectorate) with its ROBA-linearstop. Now, the company has also had its pneumatic clamping unit certified by the TV Sd (Southern German Technical Inspectorate). In addition to the required test criteria for holding brakes, 100 dynamic braking procedures were conducted during the test - the brakes were also easily able to fulfil these requirements.

In order to secure gravity-loaded axes in machines and systems, linear brakes, among others, are particularly effective, as they take effect on separate brake rods independent of the drive line. Therefore, no toothed belts, couplings or spindle nuts are located in the safety line of the brake. With its ROBA-linearstop, mayr power transmission has developed a reliable safety brake specially designed for braking and holding linearly moved masses, and which takes effect on a separate brake rod. The brake works according to the fail-safe principle, generating the braking force through thrust springs. Depending on the design, it is released hydraulically, pneumatically or electromagnetically; it is available as a full-quality brake for dynamic braking actions or as a clamping unit.

Most linear brakes available on the market today usually function as static clamping units designed to hold axes safely at a standstill. However, people may remain under suspended loads during operation, maintenance or even during the production process, without the load transfer having been made onto the mechanical linear brake. If the drive were to fail completely in these operating conditions, the linear brake alone would be responsible for the reliable deceleration of the load. Therefore, the ROBA-linearstop clamping units by mayr power transmission are dimensioned so that they are also suitable for emergency braking procedures. And this has now also been confirmed by the TV Sd.

Bernd Kees, the Product Manager at mayr power transmission explains: "In addition to the required testing criteria for holding brakes, we have also conducted 100 dynamic braking actions with our pneumatic clamping unit during the certification procedure by the TV Sd. This test, which is not normally part of the TV test for holding brakes, was important to us, as dynamic braking actions occur repeatedly in practical application." The pneumatic clamping unit was therefore tested under realistic conditions and was able to fulfil all the requirements without any trouble at all.

In addition to the pneumatic holding brake, mayr power transmission offers another pneumatic version of the linear brake, which has been inspected and confirmed by the TV Sd as a full-quality dynamic braking device a while ago. It easily fulfils the basic test principles for emergency braking actions with holding function for linear movements (GS-MF-28) of the Berufsgenossenschaftlichen Instituts fr Arbeitsschutz (Trade Association Institution for Occupational Protection, German abbreviation: BIA). This basic test principle defines 1 million switchings, both with load transfer and without, as well as an additional 1000 dynamic braking actions.
