Sensors meet strict requirements of military RD&T programmes

At the DSEI exhibition (10-13 September 2013, ExCeL, London), Micro-Epsilon (stand N3-271) will present a range of measurement products suitable for military, defence and security applications. Micro-Epsilon sensors are used to measure distance, position, vibration, dimensions, surface profile, thickness, temperature and colour, using both contact and non-contact measurement techniques.

Sensors meet strict requirements of military RD&T programmes

Highlights on the stand at DSEI will be the company's new Embedded Coil Technology (ECT) for non-contact eddy current sensors, a range of non-contact thermal imagers, temperature sensors, as well as laser displacement sensors, confocal, capacitive, time-of-flight, draw wire and colour recognition sensors.

For those involved in vehicle/aircraft R&D and test programmes (RD&T), Micro-Epsilon offers a wide range of high-precision, non-contact measurement sensors and systems - many of these are miniature, high-performance (accuracy, resolution, repeatability and sensitivity) sensors that also offer the latest digital communications/fieldbus network interfaces, intelligent integrated software and closed loop control.

As a proven supplier to the military/defence sector, Micro-Epsilon's products can be found in a number of military RD&T applications, including non-contact sensors for: optical missile testing systems; measuring small temperature differences on aircraft/vehicle braking systems/rotor blades; measuring vibration/load on aircraft wings; aircraft steering systems and landing gear; and miniature lightweight thermal imaging cameras for UAVs.

The eddyNCDT 3100 displacement sensor is the first standard, catalogue sensor to benefit from Micro-Epsilon's Embedded Coil Technology (ECT). ECT is a technological breakthrough in eddy current sensor design and manufacture, enabling ultra-compact designs to be produced.

ECT provides almost unlimited scope in terms of the external design and geometrical shape of the sensor, which can be adapted to suit virtually any application. The sensors offer extreme mechanical robustness, resulting in longer service intervals and higher temperature stability. The sensors are suitable for harsh operating environments, including high vibration, impact shocks and extreme operating temperature ranges (-193degC to +600degC).

Micro-Epsilon will also showcase its thermoIMAGER TIM 450 inline infrared thermal imager. This higher resolution camera not only offers improved image resolution, but also detects even smaller temperature differences. The TIM 450 is able to capture and store thermal video and images with very high optical resolution (382 × 288 pixels) at a full frame rate of 80Hz. A new detector provides a thermal sensitivity of 40mK, enabling the camera to detect even smaller changes in temperature.

The stand will also feature the thermoMETER CSmicro, one of the smallest infrared temperature sensors currently available. This miniature sensor has a diameter of just 14mm, with the electronics unit now fully integrated in the cable. The sensor includes an LED for self-diagnostic functions or for displaying the current measured temperature and is suitable for high-volume OEM applications.
