Ultra-compact Slice I/O system helps machine builders save space

Eaton has developed a new ultra-compact modular slice I/O system with a wide range of benefits for machine builders. The XN300 I/O system, which features CANopen connectivity, plug-in connector technology and high channel density, complements the power management company's already extensive automation portfolio.

Especially when used with the company's HMI/PLC products, the XN300 system allows the implementation of exceptionally compact yet highly customisable systems. In addition, because of the intelligent functionality of the XN300 modules, in many applications fewer modules are needed, which means significant cost savings for users.

XN300 modules have a practical and convenient assembly system that, in conjunction with their plug-in connectors, allows I/O stations with sensors and actuators to be pre-assembled. This facilitates commissioning and maintenance. The compact design of the system and its clearly identified connections make it very easy to work with.

This combination of features means that Eaton's ultra-slim XN300 modular slice I/O system makes it possible for machine builders to produce machines that are simpler, more compact and more cost effective.

Because of its compact design, Eaton's new I/O system occupies a small amount of space in the control panel. It therefore fulfils one of the main requirements of today's machine designers, for whom every cubic centimetre counts and minimising equipment size is a key concern. With the XN300 system, up to 20 channels require a frontal area of just 12.5mm × 102mm, including plug-in connectors and a display that provides users with an instant visual overview of operational status.

The smart functionality of the XN300 modules offers opportunities for machine builders to make big cost savings. For example, groups of digital outputs can share switching, fusing and power supply arrangements. Some digital input units in the range have integrated counting functions, and some types of analogue input module offer extra functions, including temperature measurement, cold junction compensation and the generation of reference voltages. And the modular concept of the XN300 system means that users can easily assemble custom systems that meet their precise requirements.

Another key benefit of the XN300 system is that it can be installed very quickly. The rational assembly concept of the system divides the installation process into two stages, neither of which requires the use of tools. The first stage, which can be conveniently carried out in a workshop, is the assembly of the I/O stations and the second is the installation of the assembled stations in their final locations, where they simply clip on to standard mounting rail.

Modules are easy to add

Further, because the modules feature plug-in connectors, users need only push stripped wire ends into the connector plugs, or plug in pre-wired connectors, and the system is ready for use. Modules can also be replaced or added quickly and easily during maintenance. Despite the large number of connections involved, the design of the XN300 system with its clear and highly functional arrangement of up to 20 channels on up to five plug-in connectors makes it easy and convenient to use. The mounting clips are readily accessible even when the modules are installed and the modules can be individually labelled. Indicator lights located next to each terminal, communication diagnostics and programmable application diagnostics provide detailed information about the system status.

Eaton's XN300 system is integrated into automation systems at the fieldbus level via its CANopen gateway which also measures a width of only 12.5mm. Fast backplane communication in the CANopen system environment allows reaction times of less than 1ms to be achieved. Up to 640 channels can be addressed for stations with the maximum of 32 subscribers. These features make the XN300 system well suited for use in challenging environments.

A software tool - XN300-Assist - is available to help users with system configuration and to facilitate preliminary testing of systems during commissioning.
