Upgraded winch control from Rexroth

Bosch Rexroth has upgraded its electrohydraulic controller used to enhance the performance of the manufacturer's Active Heave Compensation (AHC) system for offshore winching applications. The new Rexroth DS2R electrohydraulic controller, which replaces the previous DS1 model, features proportional valve technology ensuring increased reliability and simpler maintenance.

The proportional valve technology offers a number of operational advantages crucial in wave motion conditions, such as high dynamic response, accurate motion and energy efficiency. In addition, the proportional valve is capable of handling a greater range of fluid viscosities and requires less pressure drop to maintain control. The Rexroth DS2R also boasts a streamlined design, eliminating the need for a sandwich filter, reducing the potential of contamination.

The controller is fitted directly to Rexroth's A4VSO and A4VSG hydraulic axial piston components that act as secondary control units in rotary AHC systems, serving as either a pump or motor to manage variations in torque on winch drives.

In offshore operations where equipment is transferred to and from the vessel and the sea bed, winch control is a vital function handled by the Rexroth AHC system. The winch wire carrying the equipment is fed from the vessel through to the AHC system, which compensates for the ship's movements in the open sea to ensure the load is kept steady during transfer.

Steve Smith, Sector Manager, Marine and Offshore at Bosch Rexroth, says: "Vessels at sea are continuously moving with the ocean swell and vertical motion in particular has significant effects on subsea lifting operations. The new Rexroth DS2R enhances the operational performance of AHC systems and ensures goods can be transported to and from the sea bed reliably and efficiently."

A controller is also available with a servo valve (DS2S) instead of a proportional valve to meet the needs of other applications with high dynamic requirements.
