White Paper: machine guarding and PUWER assessments

Procter Machine Guarding has published a new free White Paper, The requirements for machinery guarding with respect to PUWER.

The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) are UK regulations are intended to ensure the safety of people at work who are using 'work equipment' - which encompasses everything from scissors to CNC machining centres. The new White Paper focuses on the specialist subject of machine guarding, as this is often not understood fully and the consequences of inadequate machine guarding can be very severe or, in the worst cases, fatal.

Sections in the White Paper consider the following:

  • When PUWER assessments are necessary
  • What the regulations require as far as machine guarding is concerned
  • Compliance with standards
  • Selection of safeguarding measures
  • CE marking
  • Documentation
  • Machine guarding compliance surveys

Most usefully, there are also tips for what to look for in a PUWER assessment, which draws on the many years of experience amassed by Procter's machine guarding experts.

Anyone with responsibility for PUWER assessments of machines or, indeed, anyone with responsibility for machine safety will find the PUWER White Paper very useful.

Procter's PUWER White Paper can either be downloaded as a PDF or read online. The PDF version has the benefit of additional sections with lists of useful resources and sources of further information. PDF copies are available free of charge from the Downloads section of the website or the White Paper can be read online.
