Artesis, a supplier of intelligent predictive maintenance systems, is showcasing its new Plant Condition Monitor (PCM) at Maintec 2009. Building on the success of the Artesis Motor Condition Monitoring (MCM) system for electric motors, PCM has been specifically developed to work with generators and is suitable for a wide range of applications including turbo alternators, diesel generators and wind turbines.

By accurately monitoring the condition of generators and their prime movers, effectively using the generator itself as a sophisticated transducer, PCM is simpler to use and more cost effective than other conventional systems. It uses advanced NASA-developed technology to provide automated set-up and fault diagnosis with minimal user intervention, making it well suited for equipment in inaccessible or hazardous environments.

Andy Bates, director at Artesis, says: "From our experience, it was clear that the industry required a reliable and cost effective condition monitor solution specifically designed for applications with generators. Our MCM solution has been very well received in a number of sectors such as the water, oil and gas, transportation and manufacturing industries, and has made a big impact in the condition monitoring market that we are now offering the PCM as a total predictive maintenance system for plants with generators. We have already had a great response from customers using the PCM system from small auxiliary diesel generators right up to 95 mega watt turbo alternators."

PCM provides a robust monitoring and assessment system for machinery by continuously taking measurements and comparing them with its reference condition, in order to assess the severity and type of any developing fault. When PCM detects a fault, it presents the results of its analysis to the user in a simple traffic light display. This provides local staff with an immediate indication that a problem is developing. Detailed diagnostic information is provided by means of its standard networking facilities, and covers a vast range of mechanical and electrical problems including imbalance, misalignment, bearing damage, gearbox faults, isolation, and many others.
