Allegro MicroSystems Europe's new A3908 is a low-voltage bidirectional DC motor driver IC in an ultra-compact package measuring only 2mm square. Combining a high operating current with a wide operating voltage range, the new device is suitable for use in battery operated applications including cameras, toys and games, portable printer/scanners and test instrumentation.
With a typical input voltage range of 3.0V to 5.5V the A3908 produces output currents up to 500mA. It incorporates a full-bridge output incorporating source-side linear operation, which produces a constant voltage supply across the motor coil. This regulated output minimises motor voltage change due to current variation and battery voltage tolerance.
Two logic inputs are provided to control the motor's direction of rotation, brake and standby modes, and to allow optional pulse-width modulation of the sink driver circuitry. Internal protection circuitry includes thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout, and crossover (shoot-through) protection. Standby supply current is less than 500nA.
The A3908 is supplied in a 2.0 × 2.0 × 0.575mm 8-lead DFN package with exposed thermal pad (package suffix EE). This small footprint package is lead (Pb) free, with 100 per cent matt tin leadframe plating. Operating temperature range is -40degC to +85degC.
