A machine builder's Guide to CAN-bus

The White Paper released earlier this year by Bedfordshire-based integrators and automation experts Control Technologies UK is proving popular with readers of MachineBuilding.net

Control Technologies’ 15-page illustrated white paper is described by the company as a 'must see' for machine builders and automation professionals and points out that engineers who are considering using CAN-bus for the first time, (or who have recently embarked on a CAN-bus project for the first time) may find it equally useful.

After a short introduction to CAN-bus (there is a more detailed guide to getting started with CAN-bus on the Control Technologies UK website), the White Paper examines the types of application for which CAN-bus is suitable and the advantages that this technology offers machine builders. The paper also outlines key elements to consider when writing a functional specification for the CAN-bus system, and then presents a four-step guide to implementing a CAN-bus system on machinery.

Other useful sections in the White Paper cover the limitations of CAN-bus for machine builders, and also tips for successful implementation of CAN-bus systems. The paper is available as a PDF so it can be read on-screen or downloaded and printed out if preferred. You can find the paper here.
