ABB GoSelect simplifies motor, drive and PLC selection for any application

To address bottlenecks in component specification, ABB launched GoSelect, an intuitive web-based solution designed to streamline the selection, sizing, and system-level configuration of motors, drives and PLCs, as ABB Global Digital Lead Katriina Raito explains.

For engineering design teams, one of the most persistent challenges lies in selecting components that meet the specific requirements of an industrial project. The process requires not only identifying essential elements but also selecting product variants that guarantee the necessary performance and compatibility.

Relying on manual methods or fragmented tools can turn a precise engineering task into a timeintensive, errorprone process that delays the move from concept to execution.

ABB's GoSelect brings everything together in a single platform, helping engineers create automation systems that are both scalable and efficient.

Just a year after its launch, GoSelect has demonstrated strong adoption, attracting up to an average of 250-300 active users every day. User uptake has climbed steadily week by week. With new features on the horizon, such as broader localisation and stronger market outreach, GoSelect is poised for even greater growth across regions and industry segments.

Streamlining every step

GoSelect brings intelligence and clarity to the product selection process, removing complexity from multioption comparisons. Once inside the platform, users can: select and size motors and drives using either guided prompts or direct input; perform energy efficiency calculations for motor drive packages; configure complete AC500 PLC systems that include human machine interface (HMI) integration, modular I/O selection and the drive variant; generate comprehensive project documentation such as bills of materials, system diagrams, and detailed reports; and securely store and retrieve project files through cloud access.

Within a single project, GoSelect makes it easy to build and evaluate multiple configuration scenarios while keeping every version recorded. This integrated approach replaces the need for separate tools, bringing everything together in one cohesive workspace.

Intuitive and intelligent by design

A standout capability of GoSelect is its logic-based visual interface, designed to guide informed decision-making. It provides two distinct entry workflows: guided selection, suitable for those unfamiliar with ABB's portfolio, and direct dimensioning, designed for experienced users who already know exactly what they're after. It was this intuitive and usercentred approach that earned GoSelect a recent iF Design Award.

The latest GoSelect features focus on efficiency and accuracy. Engineers can now configure multiple drives in one step using batch configuration, while PLC features enable clear visualisation of network connections and structuring device topologies. Automated validation then ensures that module combinations are compatible and complete, minimising oversights in component selection.

Bringing it all together

GoSelect brings together every step of drivetrain configuration, enabling users to size motors and drives and configure PLCdriven automation systems - a level of integration that's rarely seen in today's tools.

As a result, both OEMs and system integrators report shorter turnaround times when responding to requests for quotations (RFQs). By eliminating redundant data entry and reducing the likelihood of errors in sizing, system architecture, or compliance, the proposal process is made infinitely quicker and easier. Previously, engineers often relied on three or four separate tools to get the job done. With GoSelect, teams gain back valuable engineering time, freeing them to focus on optimisation and innovation rather than admin tasks.

Always moving forward

A platform of this nature is never truly complete. With five updates introduced in its first year alone, GoSelect demonstrates ABB's commitment to continuous improvement and expansion of capabilities. For instance, a multilanguage option was recently introduced - now supporting Simplified Chinese, German and Spanish in addition to English - broadening its accessibility for users around the world. Upcoming enhancements include a broader range of product integrations and accessories, as well as interactive training material and tutorials based on real customer case studies.

Looking ahead, the GoSelect roadmap points toward even greater intelligence in automation. Future iterations could allow engineers to simply define key performance requirements - like power, load, or operating conditions - and instantly generate a compliant, fully dimensioned system. The next step in automation is on the horizon, and ABB is ready to lead the way.

A new standard

By reducing complexity, saving time, and improving project execution, GoSelect represents a significant step forward in digital engineering tools. With its balance of technical depth and user-friendly design, ABB GoSelect is shaping the way engineers approach project planning and implementation today, positioning itself as a standard for the solutions they will expect for years to come.
