ABB launches matched servo motor-drive packages

ABB's new MicroFlex e190 drives and e-Series servo motors (eSM) are designed, optimised and tested as a pair to ensure a high-performance, efficient package.

MicroFlex e190 drive

The MicroFlex e190 is a single- and three-phase servo drive, rated from 0.4kW to 3kW, 105 to 240V AC. It can be flush-mounted side-by-side, which makes it possible to reduce the installation footprint by up to 40 per cent compared with previous generations and, thanks to its built-in Ethernet networking technology, the drive can be integrated within many of the major Ethernet systems without needing additional hardware options.

In addition to supporting EtherCAT, Powerlink, EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP and Profinet IO, the MicroFlex e190 also supports Pulse Train Input (Step and Direction) or analogue control, offering a migration path for systems based on older technology, to a network connected future. A powerful motion programming option can solve simple or advanced drive-based motion tasks such as indexing and preset positions, through to flying shears and registration control.

eSM servo motors

The eSM motors feature special magnetic materials and compact windings that provide a maximum torque density and low loss design, combined with a peak overload torque capability of up to 300 per cent. The new servo motors offer high-resolution absolute encoders for precise dynamic performance, resulting in greater productivity and better end product quality.

The package includes system software tools, safety devices, cables and service products, and is suitable for a wide variety of applications in the food and beverage, metal cutting and forming, plastics and rubber, and woodworking industries.

Connection to the Industrial Internet of Things

Ethernet opens up powerful control possibilities as well as giving access to secure data, allowing the motion control application to connect to the Internet of Things (IoT). The MicroFlex e190 features all major Ethernet protocols, enabling OEMs and system integrators to use one package for a variety of applications and to enable easy connectivity.

Real-time performance offered by either EtherCAT or Powerlink (both integrated) provides microsecond synchronisation between devices that enables tighter control for optimized machine cycle times and precision. The status and application-specific data provided by the drive enables device- or system-level monitoring and provides a platform for OEMs to offer services such as predictive maintenance.

Lower total cost of ownership

By selecting drive and motor components from one supplier, OEMs and system integrators can benefit from a ready-tested package, as well as one source for service and back up. They can be sure that ABB's suite of products work seamlessly together, which can be a challenge when using components form multiple vendors.

The MicroFlex e190 is straightforward to install thanks to its separate motor power and easy-to-wire connectors, thereby saving on installation costs and time compared with drives using specialised high-density connectors. Numerous details such as an innovative EMC bonding and cable support feature, simpler cabinet mounting, integrated Safe Torque Off (STO) that can be daisy-chained for simpler wiring, all contribute to ease of installation. Downtime can be minimised by the use of a memory unit that saves all the relevant applications parameters. The memory unit enables drive configurations to be prepared off-site and then quickly swapped to another drive unit without using a PC or having to re-enter parameters via a keypad, thereby minimising downtime and solving remote support issues.

Ultimately, the same ABB support and service network can be utilised for the whole system, ensuring ownership and simplified support.

Driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution

For over four decades ABB has been working on process control systems, communications, sensors and software. These digital technologies enable ABB's customers in industries, utilities and infrastructure to analyse data more intelligently, optimise their operations, and boost their productivity and flexibility. ABB is advancing its digital offering as ABB Ability, helping its customers develop their existing technologies, while keeping sight of its enduring commitment to safety, reliability, cyber security and data privacy, leveraging the Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0).

The matched servo motor-drive packages extend ABB's offering in this area.
