All-in-one speed controller uses NEMA size 34 motor

IMS is launching the MDrive34Plus2 Speed Control as the latest addition to its MDrivePlus product line of combined motor, driver and encoder units. The MDrive34Plus2 benefits from a digital oscillator for accurate speed control, resulting in an all-in-one variable speed control product utilising a NEMA size 34 high-torque brushless 1.8degree motor. NEMA size 17 and 23 motors are also available.

Not only does the MDrive34Plus2 include a programmable oscillator, but it also has an easy-to-program parameter setup GUI that communicates over SPI (serial peripheral interface). Numerous other product features include two separate configurable speed control inputs that may be preset and digitally selected, an output frequency up to 5MHz, and three adjustable modes of operation: voltage, current and PWM. Step and direction output signals may be used to control a second axis that follows the speed of the first, thereby simplifying wiring and enabling machines with large tables or wide conveyors to be controlled while eliminating drift between motor speeds.

The MDrive34Plus2 Speed Control accepts a broad input voltage range from +12 to +75V DC, delivering enhanced performance and speed. Oversized input capacitors are used to minimise power line surges and reduce problems that can occur with long runs and multiple drive systems. An extended operating range of –40 to +75degC provides long-life, trouble-free service in demanding environments.

IMS claims the MDrive34Plus2 delivers 'unsurpassed smoothness and performance' by means of advanced second-generation current control. By applying innovative techniques to control current flow through the motor, resonance is significantly dampened over the entire speed range - and audible noise reduced.

The MDrive34Plus2 Speed Control can reduce size, cost and complexity in a wide range of brushless motor applications without compromising functionality, and is excellent for applications where space is limited and budget is important.
