Alpine Components sells FLIR T1020 thermal camera to BP

FLIR distributor Alpine Components has sold a FLIR T1020 high-resolution thermal camera to oil industry giant BP. The advanced new camera is being used for a range of tasks that extend from checking sludge levels in tanks to checking for blocked pipes.

Alpine Components' Jonathan Hill states: "BP's existing FLIR thermal camera was 10 years old, which although still working perfectly well, could not match the technology of the new camera. As a result, BP made the sensible decision to upgrade, a move that allows the company to enjoy technology that is several orders of magnitude better. For instance, the T1020 offers just shy of 800,000 pixels, whereas BP's 10-year-old thermal camera delivers just 80,000."

According to Mr Hill, greater temperature accuracy, better quality imaging and enhanced lens optics also contributed to BP's decision. Now in use by BP's team of Level 2 certified thermographers based in the Shetland Islands, the FLIR T1020 is being used for tasks such as checking for corrosion issues and performing electrical surveys on low, medium and high-voltage equipment.

Mr Hill says: "The extra infrared resolution and temperature accuracy of the T1020 camera enables BP to carry out some of their checks from safer or more convenient distances, and will hopefully ensure that the camera lasts as long as the company's previous model.

"Anyone interested in a high-end thermal camera should seriously consider the T1020. For instance, vacuum cleaner manufacturing plants, nuclear power stations and spacecraft component manufacturers would all benefit from the advanced technology - the T1020 is without doubt the most accurate thermal camera ever made. Even television programme producers should take note as the superior resolution of the FLIR T1020 is now suitable for that required in the making of wildlife documentaries, for example."

The FLIR T1020 is the first camera in the new FLIR T1K family, offering HD resolution of 1024 × 768 pixels, 3.1 MP images with UltraMax technology, new optics from the ground up, thermal sensitivity down to 0.02degC, and the ability to record full radiometric videos.
