BARA Machine Safety Conference scheduled for September

BARA, the British Automation and Robot Association, has announced the next machine safety conference for 2008, continuing the very popular series. This will take place at Bletchley Park, near Milton Keynes, on 30 September 2008. It is run in association with Drives & Controls and sponsored by MachineBuilding.net, Laidler Associates, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), IET and IMechE. BARA Machine Safety Conference scheduled for September

The conference focuses upon the practical application of Functional Safety. A comprehensive overview of current and emerging machinery safety standards will be given by the HSE. In addition, the HSE will provide a standards update on power drive systems and robotic standards. Speakers will discuss various technologies supporting functional safety and will present case studies to illustrate the practical implementation of functional safety. Sessions will also cover safety-related control and networking.

BARA says the conference is aimed at specifiers and designers of machinery and safety-related electrical control systems, as well as managers and engineers responsible for machinery safety. Speakers will include individuals from the HSE, Rockwell Automation, Procter Machine Guarding, Pilz, Schneider Electric, Sick and system integrators.

Guided tour

Delegates will also get an opportunity to take a guided tour of the site of Britain's codebreaking activities during WWII, and the birthplace of the modern computer. There will be an opportunity to see a fully working, rebuilt version of the Turing Bombe - the machine that was used to crack the Enigma codes and which remained a secret for almost 50 years. A replica Bombe was recently commissioned and is now operational.

Dr Richard Piggin, Conference Director and Chairman of BARA's Safety SIG (Special Interest Group), comments: "These conferences continue to be extremely popular, as witnessed by the capacity attendance last year. Delegates clearly are articulating the need for a forum where functional safety standards and legislation can be discussed, particularly with the HSE (a BARA Safety SIG member). Machine designers and builders, system integrators and users of machinery have expressed their better understanding and improved knowledge these events impart. As the subject develops further, with the transition to new standards, and it becomes increasingly complex, BARA will continue to educate the market and provide a forum for debate."

Delegates' places and exhibition space at the conference are limited. To register your interest in attending or to obtain information on exhibiting at the event, please contact Richard Piggin on +44 (0)7720 807707 or visit www.bara.org.uk.
