Big couplings which are simple to handle

mayr power transmission is offering a robust, backlash-free and torsionally rigid ROBA-DS disk pack coupling, a shaft coupling which is tailored to the requirements of the heavy-duty sector. Its positive locking conical connection ensures fast and simple installation or de-installation.

Big couplings which are simple to handle

In the field of heavy load applications such as those to be found in the steel industry - from iron ore extraction to steel rolling mills - mayr power transmission stands for future-orientated couplings with high performance densities as well as high torques and speeds. In this way, the company offers not only the tried and tested, reliable torque limiters for protection against overload in heavy-duty applications, but can also utilise a store of know-how collected on shaft couplings. Users profit from the company's years of experience in development and design, and receive complete systems from a single source.

Ralf Epple, Product Manager at mayr power transmission explains: "For us, shaft couplings are not just accessories, but rather important components within an overall system - in particular concerning applications with high torques and speeds. Through comprehensive tests and trials, we have therefore further improved and optimised our shaft couplings for use in the heavy-duty sector. The result is our large ROBA-DS disk pack couplings for high torques, i.e. with a nominal torque range of > 100,000Nm, which are particularly suitable for use under exceptionally adverse conditions".

These couplings are not just robust, reliable and temperature-resistant, but also wear-free. This means that they reduce the necessary maintenance effort to a minimum. The ROBA-DS shaft couplings transmit the torque backlash-free and with exceptionally high torsional rigidity, and are distinguished, in addition to their high level of running smoothness and low mass moment of inertia, by their high balance quality.

Based on their properties, the ROBA-DS disk pack couplings can be the preferred choice in precision mechanical engineering too, such as in test stand technology. In roller test stands for lorries, for example, where high torques and speeds are also generated, users rely on the tried and tested ROBA-DS couplings in order to connect the measuring flange with the drive. As the couplings also compensate for existing radial, axial and angular shaft misalignments, they not only ensure high-precision measuring results, but also protect the bearings installed in the drive line against unwanted loads and therefore against unnecessary downtimes and costs.

Simple installation and handling

mayr power transmission has equipped the large ROBA-DS disk pack couplings with an installation-friendly, positive-locking conical connection. This conical connection transmits the force and reduces the screw tightening torques to a fraction in comparison to conventional frictionally locking designs. In addition, the installation with a conical connection is substantially faster in comparison to other screw products such as clamping elements with multiple screws - and no special tools are required.

In installed conditions, clamping screws pull the conical bolt into the tapered bores of the mounting parts and the collar bushings on the disk packs. To de-install the disk packs, the clamping screws are removed again and screwed in using the press cover onto the opposite side, into the conical bolts. This causes them to come off and permits them to be axially removed. The disk packs and sleeves can thus be radially installed or de-installed without drive units such as the motor and gearbox having to be displaced. The simple assembly and short installation time periods not only have decisive advantages in the field of test stand technology with its frequent test object changes, but also ensure shorter downtimes in general.

ROBA-DS disk pack couplings simultaneously unite high performance density with absolute backlash-free function: they transmit torques up to the nominal torque completely backlash-free and with consistent high torsional rigidity. The stated shaft misalignments can be utilised to 100 per cent in total without influencing the transmittable torque.

mayr power transmission offers a wide-ranging spectrum of disk pack couplings, and thus covers a large span from very low to very high torques. The wide range of standard modules with numerous available hub designs ensures, in addition to high flexibility, adaptability in diverse drive constellations. Ralf Epple notes: "In the field of the large couplings, users tend to revert to their preferred design. For this reason, we have developed a clever system, using which we can on the one hand utilise our standard solutions and on the other can remain flexible in terms of connections. In this way, we can easily develop new application concepts - tailored to each individual cas".
