Automation of discrete motion tasks is core to modern manufacturing, as British Encoder Products points out. Encoder technologies in these designs use optical, capacitive, inductive or magnetic operation to track speed and position.

Encoders provide velocity, acceleration, direction and position feedback to motion systems. Two basic types of feedback are absolute and incremental.

Absolute encoders report unique position information at all locations and are unaffected by power loss. Incremental encoders also deliver position information, but count from a reference, which may require that a system be reset to a known start position.

When applying encoders, selecting the optimum model and specifying the appropriate configuration are critical for success. Proper encoder selection begins by understanding the role of the encoder in the motion control system.

Many variables to consider

There are several variables to consider when choosing an encoder. The most common are mounting style, resolution, output type, frequency response, accuracy and electrical connections. The environment also plays a role: specifically, encoders must withstand a range of conditions, such as moisture and dust that can seep into internal optics and electronics. Sealed encoders are available to address this.

British Encoder Products (BEPC) is the European branch of the Encoder Products Group, a worldwide manufacturer of motion sensing and control devices. “As a customer-driven company, BEPC is highly responsive in the areas of customer service and technical support, with an acute focus on high performance, excellent delivery and competitive pricing,” comments BEPC.

BEPC encoders are, states the company, increasingly becoming the basic elements of automation systems in industries such as:

  • Machine building
  • Robotics
  • Automation and sorting
  • Aerospace
  • Food & Beverage
  • Printing
  • Material Handling
  • Mobile equipment etc.
