BSI has published BS EN ISO 13849-1:2015, Safety of machinery. Safety-related parts of control systems. General principles for design, which replaces both BS EN ISO 13849-1:2008 and BS EN 954-1:1997. These two standards are now withdrawn and no longer provide a presumption of conformity to the Machinery Directive.
BS EN ISO 13849-1 is a Type-B1 standard that provides guidance on the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. It specifies characteristics that include the performance level (PL) required for carrying out safety functions, and it applies to all types of technology and energy used, including electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical, for all kinds of machinery.
BS EN ISO 13849-1:2015 has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association to provide a means of conforming to the Essential Health and Safety Requirements of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
BS EN ISO 13849-1:2015 is available to purchase as a hard copy or PDF from the BSI online shop, priced 234 (or 117 for members of BSI).
