Sensors & Instrumentation 2017 closed on a high, with exhibitors commending the 8th edition of the event for the quality of its visitors. With over 80 exhibitors showcasing their products and services, a lively and informative seminar programme and an exciting range of feature areas, it was an action-packed two days for buyers and decision-makers in the field of test, measurement and control.

Additive Manufacturing National Strategy for the UK

A new initiative to bring the benefits of additive manufacturing (AM) to more industries and to establish the UK as a world leader in the field, has been launched by AM UK. AM UK is an independent, government-backed collaboration, which has been at the forefront of developing this technology for wider application across industry sectors. Additive manufacturing is a method of making production parts and products directly from design data, building accurate components by adding layers of material to obtain the final shape with minimal waste and no expensive dedicated tooling. It enables radical product re-design and creates new material properties.

Renishaw's founder awarded honorary doctorate

The University of Huddersfield has awarded an honorary doctorate to Sir David McMurtry, Chairman and Chief Executive of Renishaw. Sir David is a visiting professor at the University, which is a leading centre for the study and research of metrology, the science of measurement. He will receive the doctorate at a ceremony in November, 2017.

Omron reveals the future of machine interaction at PPMA

For the first time in the UK, Omron will demonstrate the company's new OKAO facial recognition and gesture control technology for machine access and control. Visitors to Omron's stand at PPMA, B34, will be given the opportunity to interact with an industrial robot using gesture control alone. The demonstration will also preview the latest biometrics technology, with the OKAO system operating as a facial recognition system for access control and presenting a contextualised menu dependent on the authorised access level.

First-class Renishaw engineer awarded university prize

Roxanne Pollard, a Mechanical Design Engineer at Renishaw, has been awarded the TATA prize, which is given to the highest-achieving part-time student at the University of Wales. Pollard, a former Renishaw apprentice, achieved a first-class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering.

HIMA's HIMax safety controller certified by TÜV Rheinland

HIMA's HIMax safety controller has been awarded the new cyber security certificate from TÜV Rheinland. The test agency certified the processor and the communications module in accordance with international standards IEC 62443-4-1, IEC 62443-4-2 and ISASecure EDSA 2.0.0. The certificate is based on stringent testing and evaluation of all requirements regarding IT security over the entire lifetime of the safety controller, and it says that the HIMax fulfils the requirements of security level SL 1. By combining highest safety (up to SIL 3) with IT security in a single system, the safety controller provides optimal protection for people, facilities and the environment in times of increasing cyber criminality.
