Compact, rugged, IP67, CAN-based data acquisition modules

HBM is launching its new SoMat cDAQ data acquisition modules that are rugged, mobile, CAN-based devices. Sized at only 35mm x 217mm x 50mm, the compact cDAQ modules provide a versatile distributed network of world-class signal conditioning in any environment and weather conditions.

These new modules are engineered to operate within severe temperatures ranges of -40 to 125degC with IP67 protection; the cDAQ modules enable users to take measurements in difficult test objects directly. Applications include engine enclosures, gearboxes, pumps, power generation, and many other industrial applications. The modules are designed to reduce installation time, cabling, and test set-up while lowering overall product testing costs.

The flexible cDAQ modules are compatible with any CAN ISO 11898 2.0B-based system or vehicle network and have a selectable baud rate from 20kbps to 1Mbps. Multiple modules can be connected through the CAN bus, providing nearly unlimited channel counts over distances of up to 250m. The modules are powered using a simplified 8-36V DC power source that is applied to the first module and then distributed through the rest of the network.

HBM has designed the cDAQ modules to interface with its SoMat eDAQ or eDAQlite rugged, mobile data acquisition systems, although they can interface with any CAN network.

The cDAQ-ITC module is available in 16-channel isolated thermocouple configurations for K-, J- or T-type thermocouples. Each channel has individual cold junction compensation fully isolated at up to 500V with an accuracy of +/-0.5degC. Selectable sample rates are available for each channel from 0.1 to 15Hz. The cDAQ-ITC also has digital and analogue filtering to remove high-frequency signal components above 50Hz and notches at 50Hz and 60Hz to prevent aliasing at the power line frequency bands.

Additional signal conditioning modules are expected to be launched later in 2010, complementing the cDAQ flexibility for data acquisition in harsh environments.

HBM says that the launch of the cDAQ modules underlines its determination to provide the right tools for the toughest conditions. The SoMat product family has been a leader in field data acquisition for over 25 years, where it has met the needs of numerous Fortune 500 companies in the automotive, off-highway, aerospace and defence industries.
