Compact soft starters feature advanced intelligence

Eaton is now offering the new S811+ compact soft starter for operating currents from 11-1000A. One of the smallest intelligent devices in the industry, the S811+ comes with integrated overload protection and by-pass contactor - more than the standard protective features of most soft starters available in the market.

Enclosed versions of the S811+ are up to 78 per cent smaller than similar products and motor control centre (MCC) units up to 63 per cent, saving space in the control cabinet. The S811+ is suitable for use with or without an enclosure for pump, fan and conveyor belt applications. It offers an extensive range of performance features tailored to the requirements of industrial and OEM customers, and is easy to program and install.

The S811+ comes with an intuitive user interface with a special copy-and-paste keypad on the removable operator panel. This function simplifies installation and saves time during maintenance work. It has an easy to use Digital Interface Module (DIM) that allows the user to configure the device and to read system parameters and monitor system values.

Sophisticated monitoring functions include power, power factor, phase currents, phase voltage, device temperature, and more, saving additional measurement equipment and wiring cost. The S811+ also offers native Modbus RTU and quick change connections with external EtherNet IP/Modbus TCP communication modules. Configurable warning messages help to prevent unwanted motor tripping.

Eaton's compact soft starter was continuously tested in various applications and environments, and its coated boards make it suitable for operation in harsh environments. The option of an Eaton-specific pump algorithm for the S811+ suppresses unwanted "water hammer' - a pressure surge caused when flowing water is forced to stop or change direction suddenly.

Overload protection of the S811+ prevents device damage both to the motor and soft starter, whether used in normal operation or in a faulty application, protecting against overloads, motor blocking, motor stalling, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) over temperature, phase loss or unbalanced loads.

Monitoring functions include automatic or manual reset, phase reversal, SCR short-circuit detection or SCR interruption detection, as well as diagnostic values for undercurrent, secondary voltage, overvoltage or temperature. The new product is designed in compliance with the currently applicable regulations and industrial standards such as International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) EN 60947-4-2, Australian C-Tick regulations, Canadian Standards Association (CSA) lift regulations and China Compulsory Certificate (CCC) regulations.

Compared with direct online (DOL) or star-delta starters for three-phase motors, soft starters offer jolt-free and mains-friendly motor starting for virtually any application by reducing startup peaks and peak loads, especially for motors above 5.5kW. Soft starters prevent abrupt starting and stopping, lengthen the mechanical life of the application and reduce the service costs for drive belts, bearings and gears through better control of the motor torque. Soft starters such as the S811+ therefore improve energy efficiency and the productivity of machines and plant.
