Constant-velocity shaft couplings for encoder applications

Abssac is promoting Schmidt-Kupplung Controlflex shaft couplings as being extremely well suited to shaft encoder applications. The compact design consists of two anodised aluminium hubs and a middle element that transmits torque at constant velocity. Abssac states: "Most importantly, the unique element accommodates all kinds of shaft misalignment but also exhibits very low restoring forces, making it ideal for both encoder and tacho use."

Controlflex couplings are easy to install, can act as a electrical insulator between shafts and are balanced for high-speed operation at up to 25,000rpm. This includes the quick and easy clamp-style hub versions. There are four series of Controlflex couplings for different application requirements.

Standard series Controlflex couplings are preferred for standard encoders and tachos, offering outer diameters ranging from 19-37mm. The series accommodates a maximum radial misalignment capacity, depending on size, of up to 1mm and a maximum angular misalignment capacity of up to 1.5deg. Standard bores range from 3mm up to 20mm from stock.

The Impuls Plus series is designed for high-resolution encoders with high accuracy. Due to the compact dimensions and very short overall length, the couplings can be integrated into very tight axial spaces.

Industry series couplings are offered with an increased range of outer diameters and bores for use with robust industrial encoders with larger shaft dimensions.

Customised couplings for specific encoder applications can be also be supplied, and Abssac is finding this option is increasingly popular. The company's Stacey Taylor says: "At Abssac, we like to work with the customer to meet a technical solution within budget and the Controlflex couplings allows that flexibility." To date, couplings have been supplied to suit applications requiring expanding or hollow shafts, D-shaped bores or keyway connections, special hub lengths to fit within small spaces, and axially-fixed versions.
