Custom split nut reduces machine cycle time

A machine builder required a sophisticated lead screw nut for use within a hot glue dispensing machine. Abssac responded by supplying a specially designed bronze nut to match a 20mm diameter by 4mm lead trapezoidal power screw; the bronze nut was then carefully separated into two halves. When the two halves of the nut are brought together via a precision slide arrangement, the nut functions exactly as if it were whole.

The driven screw causes the nut to traverse its length when the hot glue is being dispensed. At the end of the dispensing process, the nut separates so that the dispensing head can return quickly to the start position. This means that the screw only needs to rotate in one direction, plus the glue head returns to the start position more quickly than if the screw had to be reversed.

To date many bespoke nut designs have been supplied by Abssac, including optical mounts, cams, external threads, mounting holes, pulley grooves, tangs and linear guides. Lead screw sizes range from 1mm diameter up to 100mm, with a wide range of both metric and imperial leads per diameter. Nuts can be manufactured in almost any machinable material, including bronze, steels and advanced plastics such as Delrin, PTFE or Turcite.
