Device converts CAN and GPS data to serial data
Grant Instruments is introducing the low-cost dataTaker CANgate CAN-to-ASCII gateway device, which is suitable for a wide range of automotive and engine logging applications.
The flexible, easy-to-configure CANgate device converts CAN (Controller Area Network) and GPS (Global Positioning System) data to serial data. This allows the real-time data available on CAN and GPS networks (such as temperatures, engine speed, brake and throttle positions, latitude, longitude, speed, etc) to be captured and passed to either a sophisticated data logger or to a host computer system.
CANgate features two high-speed CAN bus ports that allow two independent CAN networks to be connected, a single RS232 GPS interface, and a serial port for data logger or PC connection. Its versatile configuration allows a user to select parameters of interest, apply statistical functions (average, minimum, maximum) and to control the format in which data is returned. CANgate also supports widely used protocols such as ISO 15765 and SAE J1939, as well as raw CAN frames.
Software included
Each CANgate device is supplied with host software to support its use in conjunction with the Grant dataTaker DT80 range of data loggers. This software facilitates direct communication between the vehicle and the logger with its intelligent control and advanced programmability.
Nathan Neal, commercial manager for data acquisition products at Grant Instruments, comments: "CAN networks are used throughout the world in passenger and commercial vehicles and carry complex messages about almost every aspect of a vehicle's performance. The dataTaker CANgate device is the latest in a range of data acquisition products and accessories on offer from Grant Instruments designed to satisfy the most demanding data collection requirements across industrial, scientific, R&D and environmental applications.
Grant's data acquisition product range extends from high-specification, portable data logging systems (the Squirrel family) through to fully integrated custom-configurable acquisition and control systems (the Datataker family), while Cambridge-based Grant affiliate Eltek produces Squirrel variants primarily for remote logging. All products come with a comprehensive warranty. OEM versions of most products are available on request.
